Project CAR Coming to West St. Paul

Project Clean Air Repair (CAR) is a sustainability endeavor funded by the nonprofit Environmental Initiative. Its goal is to help eliminate vehicle pollution by funding repairs for emissions control and exhaust systems for low-income Minnesotans.

“Project CAR exemplifies the force of partnership, showcasing how collaborative efforts between business leaders, government agencies, and community nonprofits can proactively tackle air quality issues facing our state,” said Bill Droessler, senior partnership director at Environmental Initiative. “This expansion will play a crucial role in enhancing air quality across Minnesota. Together, we’re driving change for a cleaner, healthier environment.”

Impact

Environmental Initiative estimates that “25% of passenger vehicles cause 90% of vehicle air pollution.” Older cars specifically are likely culprits, as many have worn or outdated emission controls and exhaust equipment. But price is often a barrier for repairs. Project CAR removes this barrier by reimbursing garages for these repairs so qualifying drivers pay little to nothing out of pocket.

Project CAR has already funded the repairs of almost 600 vehicles with polluting exhaust systems, preventing approximately 32 tons of emissions from being released into the atmosphere since the program began in 2017.

Locations

Turbo Tim’s Anything Automotive recently became a partner for Project CAR, joining five other garages to offer opportunities for this program:

  • The Lift Garage
  • Cars for Neighbors
  • The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Small Vehicle Garage
  • Nghia’s Auto Service
  • Newgate School

Turbo Tim’s has locations in Northeast Minneapolis, St. Paul Midway, and, notably, West St. Paul on Dodd Road.

“Joining forces with Project CAR aligns perfectly with our mission to serve the community,” said Tim Suggs, owner of Turbo Tim’s. “By providing emissions repairs at no cost to qualifying Minnesotans, we’re hitting the road running toward cleaner air and a brighter future.”
