South Metro Fire is teaming up with the Red Cross to talk about fire safety and install free smoke alarms in West St. Paul and South St. Paul on Monday, October 16.

“Home fires claim seven lives every day, but having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half,” said Terry Johnson, South Metro Fire’s deputy fire chief. “Through this Sound the Alarm event, our fire department, Red Cross volunteers, and community partners will help make our communities safer from home fires.”

Impact: Along with Fire Prevention Week October 8-14, South Metro hopes to raise awareness with the Sound the Alarm event and install up to 100 smoke alarms.

Pace Automotive: Local, family owned auto repair. Personal, honest service.

To get a free smoke alarm: Sign up for a home fire safety visit online or by calling 612-460-3674. South Metro hopes people will sign up in advance, but if not, they’ll canvass neighborhoods offering free smoke alarms and fire safety education.

Share info: You can also help South Metro by signing up for Community Connect and share vital info about your household with first responders. So far more than 100 households in West St. Paul have signed up.

History: Sound the Alarm is part of the Home Fire campaign, started in 2014 by the American Red Cross. They’ve installed 2.6 million free smoke alarms in more than 1 million homes.
