The free art exhibit “ICONS in Transformation” by Russian artist Ludmila “Mila” Pawlowska is open to the public at Augustana Lutheran Church in West St. Paul through the end of March.
What: Pawlowska’s exhibition has been traveling Europe and America since 2011, showcasing her unique take on iconography. Born in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, many of her works surround
traditional Russian icons reimagined in a contemporary format. This refocus of her art style
came in the wake of her mother’s death, when she sought out spirituality as a way to come to
terms with her grief.
- “After every image was done, I felt a sense of relief,” Pawlowska said in press release. “I was finding my own way to God.”
- Because of the religious nature of the artwork, it has been exhibited in many churches around the world.
- There are over 150 pieces in the collection, each available for purchase.
When: The exhibit is viewable from Monday through Thursday, noon to 3 p.m. (6 p.m. on Wednesdays) with guided tours available on Sundays at the same time. A virtual tour is also available.
