Marthaler Park Update Meeting: March 27

The City of West St. Paul is hosting a Marthaler Park Update meeting to give the community the latest on the ongoing improvements to Marthaler Park.

  • When: March 27 from 6-7 p .m.
  • Where: The meeting will be held at the Marthaler Park tennis courts (in case of rain, the meeting will move to city hall). The meeting has been moved to city hall.
  • What: The agenda will include background on the project and current updates, expected timelines, potential design changes to address complaints, and details about a future grand opening event.
  • More: The city website includes a project update page with more details on the improvements and the meeting.

Project timeline: Permitting issues delayed the project last year, but the city hopes to have it finished by June.

Complaints

The problem: Some residents have complained about the new design’s impact on the sledding hill and potential dangers with a storm pond, picnic shelter, and the parking lot at the bottom of the hill.

Solutions: The meeting will cover potential changes around the hill and budget implications. Changes might include re-grading, additional landscaping and natural buffers, and more.

Tree Removal

Earlier this week the city cleared a significant amount of trees and vegetation around Marthaler Lake. These were dead, hazardous, or invasive trees that needed to be removed (much like the recent forest mowing in the rest of Marthaler and Garlough Parks).

  • Replanting: “We’re working through a plan to replant the area in a way that is beneficial to the lake, visually appealing, and can withstand changes to our climate,” read a statement on the city website.
