This year’s election includes candidates for Dakota County Soil & Water Supervisor District 2, which represents West St. Paul. We’ve asked the candidates a series of questions to see where they stand on the issues. We’ll share one question and the responses at a time leading up to the general election on November 5. See our 2024 voter’s guide for more.
Previously we asked about candidates’ top issues. This time we’re asking about the position itself.
This is a virtually unknown position on the ballot. How do you see this role and why do you think it’s important?
Here are the candidates’ responses:
Kendra Sommerfeld
The role of a Dakota County SWCD Board Supervisor is important, even though it’s a lesser-known elected position. It’s a vital link between the community and conservation efforts, making sure our natural resources are managed responsibly and sustainably. Having worked for an SWCD, I understand how SWCDs operate, which equips me with the experience needed to lead effectively.
Laura Zanmiller
The role of SWCD Supervisor is to set policies that enhance and preserve our natural resources. We partner with landowners to provide technical expertise and cost share for voluntary conservation projects. We also partner with local units of government to protect our natural resources, ensuring clean water and land for future generations.
