West St. Paul Mayor Dave Napier is encouraging local students to participate in the Mayor for a Day essay contest sponsored by the League of Minnesota Cities. The contest challenges students to consider what they would do if they were mayor for a day.

“With this comes a lot of responsibility in running a city of 20,000 people,” said Napier. “But I gotta ask you—all fourth, fifth, and sixth graders—what would it be like if you were mayor for the day?”

  • Who: Students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades are eligible to enter.
  • Prizes: Winners can get $100 and recognition in Minnesota Cities magazine.
  • Deadline: December 13
  • More info: Get more details and enter online.
  • Watch: See Mayor Napier’s pitch.
