Proposed apartments on Wentworth and branding to embrace “where wonderful meets weird” are on the agenda for Monday’s West St. Paul City Council meeting.
City Branding: Embrace Weird
The city has kicked around the idea of rebranding for several years. This time they engaged All Together, a place-based creative agency, for some direction. Rather than a new logo, it’s more about placemaking and vibes. The suggested feel: “Welcome to West St. Paul, where wonderful meets weird.” Council will discuss the Marketing and Placemaking Roadmap and Brand Positioning documents during the Open Council Work Session (OCWS).
Wentworth Apartments
Multiple items for proposed apartments at Wentworth Center will come before Council. There’s a rezoning, a conditional use permit (CUP), site plan, and preliminary and final plat.
- Public hearing: Planning Commission held a public hearing and three people spoke, expressing concerns about traffic and pedestrian safety, density, and current office tenants being evicted.
- Vote: Planning Commission approved all the items, but with mixed votes. The rezoning and plat were approved 5-0, the CUP 4-1, and the site plan 3-2.
Low Income Rental Classification
Council will consider a Low Income Rental Classification (LIRC) program guide that will direct policy. This is a tax program for rental properties that redirects property tax funds to improvements in the property and is a way to improve rental housing.
In addition to the policy, Council will also consider three properties to be classified in the program.
Other Items on the Agenda:
- Appointment: Since the last round of appointments, a member of the Environmental Committee resigned and Council will consider appointing a replacement.
- Extension: During the Economic Development Authority (EDA) meeting, Council will consider extending the development agreement with Greco for the 150 Thompson property for the fourth time. Currently set to expire on March 31, this would extend it to July 31.
- Planning: If there’s time during OCWS, Council will discuss items for an upcoming strategic planning session.
