ISD 197 School Board Recap: April 7, 2025

The ISD 197 School Board heard updates on social and emotional learning, two advisory committees, and recognized student achievement.

Strategic Framework Update: Social and Emotional Learning

District staff gave an update on the strategic framework focus area of social and emotional learning (SEL).

  • The presentation focused on the Character Strong curriculum being used in elementary schools that focuses on traits including responsibility, respect, perseverance, and more; staff training that emphasized self-management, team building, and leadership; and community partnerships with 360 Communities family support workers and mental health therapists from Ellie Mental Health and Associated Clinic of Psychology.
  • “We ask our educators to do so much,” said Board Member Jon Vaupel, reflecting on the staff training. “Thank you for taking care of them.”

Other Items on the Agenda:

  • Curriculum Advisory Committee: District staff gave an update on the Curriculum Advisory Committee, a state-mandated committee made up of parents, community members, students, and staff. The group meets four times per year and has given input on the district’s annual report, legislative requirements, READ Act implementation, new course proposals, middle school schedule, grants, literacy plan, and more.
  • Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee: District staff also gave an update on the Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee, a group that meets five times per year often in conjunction with the Curriculum Advisory Committee. The group has given input on enrichment opportunities, grade acceleration, gifted and talented identification, curriculum, and more.
  • Student recognition: The school board recognized a number of student groups and individuals, including wrestling, the dance team, speech and debate, as well as Isabelle Kirchner for basketball, Nick Smock for floor hockey, and Brianna Cannon for being named the 2025 Boys and Girls Club Minnesota Youth of the Year.

Increased revenue meant an improved budget for ISD 197’s current fiscal year. The school board also approved a Language Access Plan and heard multiple updates.
