At its annual conference in Duluth earlier this month, the League of Minnesota Cities selected West St. Paul City Council Member Wendy Berry to serve as the association’s president.

Why it matters: “This role gives me the chance to learn from cities across Minnesota and bring those best practices and fresh ideas back to benefit West St. Paul,” said Berry.

What is it: The League of Minnesota Cities is an association of 830 member cities that promotes excellence in local government.

  • What they do: They offer advocacy, education and training, policy development, risk management, and other services.
  • Leadership: The League’s board of directors is a volunteer body consisting of elected and appointed city officials from throughout the state. Berry has served on the board since 2021, most recently as the first vice president.
  • Inclusion: “Serving on the League of Minnesota Cities’ board and executive committee over the past four years has introduced me to incredible people across the state and deepened my understanding of what it means to lead inclusively,” said Berry. “It’s shown me the importance of building a bigger table—creating space for more voices, more perspectives, and more people to be part of making our communities welcoming, engaging, and equitable for everyone.”

“Wendy Berry brings energy and passion for public service to our League leadership position,” said Luke Fischer, the League’s executive director. “Wendy assumes the role of president at a time when cities are facing emerging challenges, and she is poised to help her colleagues address those challenges.”

Berry is a 10-year resident of West St. Paul and works in human resources. The president’s term is for one year.

“There’s something about having a productive and friendly conversation with mayors and council members in tiny greater Minnesota towns and suburbs right next door that makes me feel like I’m doing something bigger than myself,” said Berry.
