Garlough Environmental Magnet School’s longtime Principal Sue Powell is retiring. Powell has had a 35-year career in education, including 20 years at Garlough.
“Being at Garlough has been the greatest honor of my life,” said Powell in an announcement from the district sent to Garlough families yesterday. “The school community is special, and I will miss everyone in it greatly. There truly is ‘no other place like Garlough.’”
Retirement: Powell is taking family medical leave until December and then officially retiring. She will not be returning to Garlough for the coming school year.
What’s next: The district is working on a leadership transition plan, though it’s too early to know if that will mean a new hire or an interim principal. The district did emphasize stability as the school year begins in their email to families.
History: Powell came to Garlough in 2005 to transform the school into an environmental magnet school. “Under her leadership, Garlough has become an internationally recognized and award-winning school,” noted the district announcement.
