More than 200 people braved Saturday’s snow for the Knock Out Hunger Border Battle, packing a total of 55,080 meals—just shy of the 55,118 meal goal. The food packing event pitted West St. Paul against South St. Paul in a friendly competition to see who could pack more food for local food shelves.

Winner: West St. Paul claimed the championship belt for the second year in a row, barely edging South St. Paul by packing 680 more meals—just two boxes. But local food shelves and hungry families are the real winners.

The event: South Robert Street Business Association (SRSBA) organized the event at Two Rivers High School where each city fielded teams of volunteers to pack oatmeal for Harvest Pack. The meals will be distributed to local nonprofits including 360 CommunitiesNeighborhood HouseNeighbors, Inc., and The Open Door Pantry.

The result: West St. Paul packed 87 boxes (plus five extra packs) amounting to 27,880 meals, while South St. Paul packed 85 boxes amounting to 27,200 meals—for a grand total of 172 boxes (plus five extra packs) and 55,080 meals. Last year’s inaugural event packed 96 boxes for 30,720 meals. (Note: Photos below show preliminary meal counts, while numbers above are the final tallies.)
