Former Newport Mayor Dan Lund Running for State Senate

Former Newport Mayor Dan Lund launched a campaign for state senate in district 53, representing the southern half of West St. Paul.

Where: Senate District 53 includes the southern half of West St. Paul, Grey Cloud Island Township, Inver Grove Heights, Lilydale, Newport, St. Paul Park, South St. Paul, and portions of Cottage Grove and Mendota Heights. The district leans to the DFL—Matt Klein won the 2022 election with more than 58% of the vote.

Context: It’s an open seat this year since incumbent Matt Klein is running for Congress. Two other candidates are already in the race—Paul Cumings has announced a run for the DFL and Todd Podgorski has filed to run for the GOP.

The Candidate

DFL candidate Dan Lund highlights his accomplishments as mayor and record on civil rights and the environment.

  • Why: “I believe in an America that’s fair, compassionate, and united. I refuse to accept politics that turns its back on the people who make our communities strong.”
  • Day job: Patent attorney and small business owner.
  • Elected office: Two years on Newport City Council and four years as mayor of Newport. Lund ran for reelection in 2020 and lost.

What’s Next

Caucuses are February 3, and the party endorsement process happens in the spring, with the filing period closing on June 2. A primary, if necessary, will be Aug. 11, 2026.
