The Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association gave West St. Paul Police Sgt. Elyse Wood the 2026 Meritorious Service Award.
“Her vision, organizational skills, and tireless commitment has created sustainable programs that enhance the public trust, increase community engagement, and positively impact thousands of residents each year,” said West St. Paul Police Chief Brian Sturgeon during a presentation at City Council.
Sturgeon rattled off a list of Wood’s accomplishments, including organizing weekly summer activities for kids, Cops in the Park, backpack giveaways, Heroes and Helpers, charity hockey games, holiday parade, Polar Plunge for Special Olympics, and more.
“This is just some of the things, because I keep remembering other things she does,” said Sturgeon.
- Who: Wood started with the West St. Paul Police Department as a reserve officer in 2011. Earlier this year, the Minnesota Wild recognized Wood as a community hero.
- What: The Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association has recognized officers across the state since 1971 for service that reflects the highest standards of the profession. The Meritorious Service Award is given for a series of distinguished actions and service. It does not recognize a single act but a consistent record of outstanding service. This is the first time a West St. Paul officer has received the award.
- When: The award was announced earlier this spring and City Council made a formal recognition at the June 22 City Council meeting.
“I can’t think of a person more deserving,” said Council Member Lisa Eng-Sarne. “An amazing person, amazing representative of the department and the city as a whole, day in and day out.”
