One Ten Cycles in Mendota Heights is closing after nearly 50 years in business.
“This has been far more than a bike shop to me and Katia,” wrote owner Katarina Miketin in a social media post, referring to her daughter. “It was a passion project built around growing the cycling community and getting more people, especially women, on bikes.”
Why: The economy and family. “The current economy has been challenging for many small businesses, and local shopping simply isn’t what it once was,” she wrote. “At the same time, there are people close to me who need my time and attention. I have always believed that family comes before everything else, and right now that is where my focus needs to be.”
Timeline: They’re liquidating inventory and continuing bike repairs and service through mid-July.
Background: Originally opened in the late 1970s, Miketin took over the bike shop in 2020. She made a big career change from finance, and wanted to empower women in a male-dominated industry.
Sale: The property sold for a reported $1.15 million to a developer. No word on what’s planned for the space.
Need repairs?: One Ten Cycle is still doing repairs through mid-July. After that? One of the mechanics recommend Express Bike Shop in St. Paul for basic repairs to support their youth employment program.
“Thank you to every customer, friend, and supporter who walked through our doors over the last six years,” said Miketin. “Your support meant more than you know, and I will always be grateful for the community we built together.”
