The City of Inver Grove Heights is studying Cahill Avenue to improve safety and right-size the road, with potential lane reductions and pedestrian/bike improvements. They’re looking for input with an open house on September 2 and an online survey.

Community Input

The open house is Wednesday, September 2 from 5-7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Community Center. It’s a drop-in format, so you can come any time during the open house to view materials, ask questions, and provide input. See the city flier for more details.

Potential Project

  • Where: Cahill Avenue from Upper 55th Street to Concord Boulevard.
  • What: The city is evaluating reducing Cahill Avenue to one lane in each direction with a shared, center left turn lane. The current and future traffic volumes don’t support the existing four-lane configuration. They’re also considering a trail or sidewalk along the west side of Cahill Avenue between 70th Street and 80th Street to close an existing pedestrian and bicycle gap.
  • Why: The area had 96 crashes between 2021 and 2025, with two spots exceeding critical crash rates. Between 2016 and 2025 this stretch has also seen one bike fatality and multiple bike and pedestrian minor injury crashes.
  • When: The project is in the early stages with recommendations going to City Council this fall. A feasibility study and design would happen in 2027 and 2028, with construction potentially happening in 2029 and 2030.
