Xcel Energy is finally addressing repeated power outages in Inver Grove Heights after an outpouring of complaints from residents. Some have report losing power every month.
The Problem: A feeder line along the densely wooded Inver Grove Trail seems to be the root of the issue, impacting roughly four square miles and thousands of customers.
- Short-term solution: Xcel says regular trimming will start this fall to reduce outages caused by trees and shrubs.
- Long-term solution: Xcel plans to relocate the feeder line underground. They describe it as a “high-priority project,” currently in design phase, to be completed by fall 2027.
Dakota County Commissioner Joe Atkins called it the number one complaint he heard from constituents and encouraged residents to file complaints with Xcel. KSTP followed up and received the following statement from Xcel:
“We understand the frustration these outages have caused and are moving forward with a long-term plan to improve reliability for customers in this area. Part of this area is along the densely wooded Inver Grove Trail. Most of the outages this summer have been due to dense brush and other vegetation. Regular management is scheduled to start this fall to help reduce outages caused by trees, shrubs and plants in the near term.
“Our plan is to relocate the feeder line underground. This is a high-priority project and currently in the design phase, with an estimated completion of fall 2027, dependent on the permitting process and ground conditions.”
Cost: It’s a $2.6 million project, though Atkins notes it will be paid for with Xcel’s existing operations and maintenance budget, which comes from the bills customers pay and not property taxes.
Report issues: Atkins encourages residents to continue reporting incidents. Here’s where residents can submit their complaints:
- Xcel: inquire@xcelenergy.com or 800-895-4999
- Minnesota Public Utilities Commission: consumer.puc@state.mn.us or 651-296-0406
