ISD 197 School Board Member Stephanie Levine won election to Mendota Heights mayor in November and has resigned her school board seat effective Dec. 31, 2020. Her term doesn’t end until 2021, so the board will appoint someone to the vacancy to fill out the term.

The board is accepting applications through 4 p.m. on December 22. The school board will consider applications in January with a decision expected by Jan. 15, 2021. The newly appointed board member will officially take office on Feb. 16, 2021.

The seat will be up for election in November 2021, along with Board Members John Chandler and Maureen Ramirez. The filing period to run for will open in July or August.

This will be only the fourth time in the last 30 years that a school board member has gone on to other elected positions. It is the second time in recent years that a board member has resigned after seeking higher office. Matt Klein resigned in 2016 after his election to the Minnesota Senate.
