West St. Paul went to the polls on Super Tuesday for the first local election of the year with the presidential primary. Predictably, Joe Biden and Donald Trump prevailed, but both sides saw significant dissent.

  • Turnout: Statewide turnout is about 16.5% vs. 16.9% in West St. Paul (based on registered voters vs. actual voters). In 2020, with an more contested DFL primary, turnout numbers were closer to 30%.
  • DFL vs. GOP: Competing in separate primaries as opposed to head-to-head, Republicans drew more votes statewide than the DFL, 337,919 to 244,506. But in West St. Paul it flipped, with the DFL drawing 1,152 total votes and the GOP getting total 937 votes.
  • Protest: For the DFL, a push to vote ‘uncommitted’ as a protest against President Joe Biden’s policy on the Israel-Hamas war continued to gain traction.
  • West St. Paul vs. Minnesota: Results in West St. Paul were mostly in line with the state results, except for the GOP side where Nikki Haley performed seven points better. DFL results in West St. Paul were within a point of the state results.
  • Precinct: Results diverged a bit more by precinct. Both Haley and ‘uncommitted’ performed the best in Ward 3 Precinct 1. Similar to 2020, there appeared to be a north/south divide in the DFL with the establishment doing better in the south.

Locally, the next step in the 2024 election is filing to run for public office in May. We know at least one City Council seat will be open with no incumbent running. Then there’s the primary election on August 12 (if necessary) and the general election on November 5.
