Then & Now: Robert & Moreland

Here’s a look at the Robert Street and Moreland Avenue intersection in 1961 and 2024. Both images are looking west along Moreland.

There were two gas stations at the corner of Robert and Moreland, the shell station on the southeast corner and Pace’s Phillips 66 station on the southwest corner. There’s a carwash visible further west on Moreland and the Riverview Baptist Church up the hill. On the northwest corner is First Federal Savings Bank and Signal Hills shopping center.

The Shell station is now a Jiffy Lube, but Pace’s Automotive is still there (now an Amoco, still transitioning away from Sinclair). The car wash is replaced with a storage facility. The spire of Riverview Baptist Church is just visible behind the storage building and the trees. Signal Hills shopping center is still there, though vastly updated with T-Mobile, Taco Libre, and Subway visible. The Legacy Commons apartments are visible in the distance.

Stoplights, street lines, and increased traffic on Robert Street are indicative of the growth over more than 60 years.
