Work has begun on a new outdoor patio space at Wentworth Library. It’s on the east side of the building and will add landscaping between the building and Wentworth Avenue.

“We are looking forward to having an inviting outdoor space for the community to gather and connect with each other and enjoy nature and art at the library,” said Branch Manager Stacy Lenarz.

  • What: The patio will include accessible picnic tables and benches. Native plantings will also be added in a larger area around the patio. No trees will be removed for this project.
  • Art: “We will bring art and nature together in our outdoor space by adding a garden kaleidoscope which will look into the native planting beds,” said Lenarz.
  • Events: “We look forward to trying a variety of different events on the patio such as musical performances, arts and crafts for all ages and abilities, outdoor teen activities, and our Summer Discovery Celebrations can all make use of the patio and the shaded lawn on the east side of the library,” said Lenarz.
  • When: Construction started last week and will continue through the middle of August. Some of the features will be installed in late August and plantings will be done in the fall. Expect it to take a few years for the native plants to become fully established.
  • Access: The door opening onto the patio is an emergency exit, so it can’t be used by patrons. But during events library staff can open the door.
  • Funding: The library received a $50,000 grant from Toro to cover the bulk of the project cost. Additional funding came from the Library Foundation, Friends of the Wentworth Library, and the Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA).
  • Closure: The path along Wentworth Avenue will be closed during construction.
