New Pizza Month in Mendota Heights

After 18 years, Tommy Chicago’s Pizzeria in The Village in Mendota Heights closed, but less than a year later, the city is getting two new pizza places in one month: Bricksworth Beer Company and Happy Joe’s Pizza & Ice Cream.

Started in the Twin Cities in 2020, this is the third location for this local brewpub.

  • What: Detroit-style pizza, uniquely flavored wings (Cool Ranch Dorito, Thai peanut, etc.), and locally brewed craft beer, wings. They’ve also got a huge bar, plenty of large TVs for watching sports, a large private dining room, and an outdoor patio.
  • Where: South of Highway 62 in Mendota Plaza at 752 North Plaza Drive.
  • When: Opening Friday, August 7 at 11 a.m.
  • Why Mendota Heights: “Suburban location with space similar to where we started in Burnsville, solid demographics, lack of similiar dining experiences in the area, and Paster Properties bringing the opportunity to our attention,” said Mark Murphy, the head of hospitality at Bricksworth.

Happy Joe’s Pizza & Ice Cream

Happy Joe's Pizza and Ice Cream

A regional chain with a several dozen locations, this will be the third Happy Joe’s in Minnesota and first in the Twin Cities metro.

  • What: Happy Joe’s has a decidedly family atmosphere, with an emphasis on unique pizzas (the taco pizza is a cult favorite), ice cream sundaes, and birthday parties. “We’re a place focused on providing an enjoyable atmosphere with horns celebrating birthdays and a focus on community connection,” said Brian Smith, the principal franchisee. “We’re meant to be a place where you come for the food and fun, but can also play some arcade games, grab some Bridgeman’s Ice Cream or watch the train go around in hopes it lands in a spot to win a prize!”
  • Where: North of Highway 62 in the Village at 750 Main Street.
  • When: They plan to open Monday, August 24.
  • Why Mendota Heights: “When looking for a location, I was looking for one that had a strong community feel that we could be a strong partner with,” said Smith. “I know there aren’t many community meeting places and we’ll have a party room available for hosting! I also wanted to find a location that was very accessible.”
