On Monday, West St. Paul City Council will set the maximum property tax levy for 2027 and secure a problem property at 161 Haskell Street East.
Property Tax Levy
City Council will set the maximum property tax levy increase for 2027. This is the number that gets mailed out to residents in November. They approve the final number in December, and it can come down from what’s approved now but not go up.
- The current proposal is a 7.28% increase.
Problem Property: 161 Haskell Street East
Council will consider an emergency ordinance to secure a single family home at 161 Haskell Street East. The city’s chief building official inspected the property and called it an “extreme fire hazard,” citing multiple issues including structural problems, unsafe systems, accumulated garbage, and pest infestation. City staff boarded up the property and Council is being asked to ratify this action. The home is in foreclosure and potential abatement or demolition would come back to the Council through the normal hazardous property process.
Other Items on the Agenda
- Charlton Place: Council will consider two items to set up a Housing Improvement Area (HIA) for Charlton Place condos. This allows the condo association to take out a loan through the city for improvements.
- TIF transfer: The Economic Development Authority (EDA) will consider the sale of Wentworth Commons (1590 Robert St., the strip mall with Noodles & Company). With the sale of the property, tax increment financing (TIF) and other details need to be reassigned.
