Fixing Tripping Hazards on Robert Street Sidewalks in West St. Paul

Thanks to West St. Paul Chiropractic for their support.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is fixing sidewalk tripping hazards along Robert Street in West St. Paul to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

Why: Time and weather have caused sidewalk panels to settle or pop up, creating gaps and tripping hazards.

Where: The entire length of Robert Street, from Annapolis Street to Mendota Road. They’ll start on the west side of Robert and work south. It’s not a total reconstruction, just fixing problem spots where they’ve cropped up.

When: Work starts August 14 and should take about a month, weather permitting.

Closures: Drivers should watch for occasional shoulder and lane restrictions, while pedestrians can expect short-term sidewalk closures and alternate routes. (Just add it to the list of 2023 construction projects.)

Background: The city approached MnDOT a few years back to address these issues. MnDOT’s Equity Advancement Group is leading the maintenance project. It’s expected to cost between $150,000 and $200,000, with West St. Paul paying about half.
