West St. Paul City Council Preview: Sept. 11, 2023

The 2024 budget is the big item on the West St. Paul City Council agenda, though other items include rental housing, legislative changes, solar carports, and required bike parking.

2024 Budget

West St. Paul City Council will consider the preliminary 2024 budget. This budget has been presented at previous meetings and staff have worked to reduce the levy.

  • Total 2024 budget: $41.6 million
  • 2024 levy increase: 6.03% (that’s lower than most surrounding communities)

Final approval of the budget will come in December.

Other Items on the Agenda

  • Police: The mayor will swear in a new police officer, Two Rivers graduate and assistant wrestling coach Payton Weber-Rolfes.
  • Vacate an alley: Council will consider vacating an unused alley between Butler Avenue and Stanley Street. A public hearing will be held at the next meeting.
  • Legislative changes: During the Open Council Work Session (OCWS), staff will give a presentation on legislative changes that may impact city operations.
  • Housing: Also during the OCWS, staff will present on efforts to engage and educate renters, as well as improve rental housing as a part of the Council’s strategic priorities.
  • Final readings: Council will give final consideration to ordinances on solar carports and required bike parking, both approved at the last meeting.
  • Latine Heritage Month: Council will honor Latine Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) and Rep. Maria Isa Perez-Vega will read the proclamation in Spanish. (Here’s a “Latine” explainer if that’s a new term for you.)
