Paint the Pavement: Community Mural in West St. Paul’s 40 Acres

A large group came out to West St. Paul’s Kennedy Park today to create a community mural. The project is part of the community engagement process for the Kennedy Park renovation and funded by a grant from the AARP.

The Design

The Art Park subcommittee worked with several local designers to come up with concepts. The community voted on four concepts and the 40 Acres design was selected. Local artist Carolyn Swiszcz created the concept with some refinement help from local designer Travis Olson.

The design taps into the history of the 40 Acres neighborhood and a creek that used to run through the park before being buried as a storm sewer.

Swiszcz and Olson translated the design into a paint-by-numbers project and sketched it onto the pavement in a 40-foot circle so community members could bring the design to life. A rotating crew of residents painted for nearly four hours on Saturday to complete most of the project. Touch ups and finishing touches will be added later by the artists.
