Speed limit sign in front of Heritage E-STEM Middle School.

School Speed Zone Coming to Butler Avenue

Dakota County is adding a school speed zone in front of Heritage E-STEM Magnet School. The change will reduce the speed on Butler Avenue from 35 mph to 25 mph when students are arriving for and departing from school.

  • The school zone is centered on the mid-block crossing that connects Heritage with Matson Field and will extend 300 feet in each direction.
  • Flashing signs will indicate the school zone.
  • There’s no specific timeline for installation, but officials expect the signs to be installed soon.
  • In 2016, the county added mid-block curb extensions to create a safer crosswalk. A 2021 assessment identified this as a key crossing. A 2024 engineering evaluation provided the data to justify the reduced school zone speed limit.

More Speed Limit Changes

That’s not the only speed limit change in the area. The Minnesota Department of Transportation recently raised the speed limit on Highway 62 from 55 mph to 60 mph effective May 1.
