With school starting this week in ISD 197, educators offer students a pep talk as they return to class.

What advice do you want to give to students as they start the new year?

We talked with seven staff members across ISD 197 to get their perspective:

Residential real estate services serving Minneapolis, St Paul and the Twin Cities Metro. Looking for a Realtor to help you buy, sell or invest?
  • Kindness: “Be kind, show empathy, and always be a bucket filler!” –Jessalin Karsnia, Counselor, Somerset Elementary
  • Join: “I can’t stress enough how important it is to get involved in something before or after school. Joining a sport, club, or activity is one of the best ways to build connections, feel a sense of belonging, and truly enjoy your time in our district.” –Mason Young, At Promise Coordinator, Heritage E-STEM Magnet School
  • Routine: “Set routines and stick to them. When daily activities occur at the same time, it supports the internal clocks of our students and creates a sense of safety for children.” –Rob Sahli, Principal, Moreland Arts and Health Sciences Magnet School
  • Connect: “Find your person within the building! Join clubs and take advantage of the many opportunities available to you! This is your time to experience things and grow!” –Kimber Scott, Administrative Assistant, Two Rivers High School
  • Share: “Contribute to your school community by sharing aspects of your own culture such as customs, food, stories, and more. When students feel connected and included, they are more likely to be engaged in class, participate, ask questions and perform better academically.” –Xiomara Medina Calderon, Cultural Liaison/Interpreter/Translator, Garlough Environmental Magnet School
  • Start fresh: “As you begin this new school year, remember to start fresh. Work hard and try to grow some everyday. Stay curious—ask questions, explore new ideas, and never stop learning. Most importantly, be kind to everyone you meet. Through kindness and a positive attitude, you will not only make this a great year for you, but for the entire school community.” –Heidi Koury, Principal, Heritage E-STEM Magnet School
  • You got this: “Be yourself, ask for help, stay encouraged. You’ve got this!” –Jessica Cabak, Principal, Two Rivers High School

See part two for what’s exciting in ISD 197. Thanks to ISD 197 staff for sharing their thoughts as we start another school year.
