Nearly 750 people braved sub-zero temperatures to participate in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at Two Rivers High School this morning. Organized by students in the school’s Key Club, the event featured at least a dozen stations where volunteers could do projects for local nonprofits.

Why: “When we serve others, especially those who are less well off, we move closer to the world Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of,” said student organizer Kendyl Dodson.

Introduction: The event started with a poem and songs by students from Mendota Elementary School. Then State Rep. Mary Frances Clardy spoke, sharing her story of growing up in a much more segregated society than what we see today.

  • “You have a chance to carry forward history,” Clardy said. “Speak up when you see something that’s unfair. Speak up with respect. Stand firm in your values, even though others might disagree. Choose peace over retaliation.”

Support: The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is sponsored by the South Robert Street Business Association and Amore Coffee.

“You cannot expect a better world without being a part of the change,” said Dodson.
