The City of West St. Paul is starting a five-year plan to replace park signs. It starts this fall with new signs in Marthaler, Garlough, Kennedy, and Albert Park, plus the ice arena and banners on Robert Street.
What’s included: These include main park signs, interpretive signage, wayfinding, regulations, and more.
Why: The large park signs haven’t been replaced in decades, though the city has talked about doing it multiple times.
- Look: The signs will match the city’s new branding and colors, which is an intentional effort to differentiate the city. “We’re really working to establish a West St. Paul identity since so many people around the metro and beyond confuse West St. Paul with the West Side, South St. Paul, North St. Paul, and St. Paul Park,” said Parks & Recreation Director Eric Weiss.
- More info: “The new signs will offer a lot more information, including park address (safety issue), amenity icons, and QR codes,” said Weiss. “We also wanted to celebrate the city’s unique history and habitats, so the new interpretive signs offer education.”
- Aging: “Many of the existing signs were nearing their end-of-life and the retaining wall beds they’re placed in were failing,” he added.
Cost: This phase of the sign project costs $151,000.
When: Work has already started and the contractor is installing signs as they’re manufactured, but this round should be done by the end of the year.
Next: 2027 will see new signs at the Sports Complex, Harmon Park and the Poolside Park.

Background: West St. Paul City Council considered the signage back in the spring, discussing options and deciding on the stone version.
