This year’s election includes candidates for Dakota County Soil & Water Supervisor District 2, which represents West St. Paul. We’ve asked the candidates a series of questions to see where they stand on the issues. We’ll share one question and the responses at a time leading up to the general election on November 5. See our 2024 voter’s guide for more.

Previously we asked about candidates’ top issues, the position itself, and environmental issues. This time we’re asking what sets the candidate apart.

What sets you apart from the other candidates? What do you bring to the table that no one else can?

Here are the candidates’ responses:

Kendra Sommerfeld

(campaign site)

What sets me apart is my professional experience in both agricultural conservation and urban stormwater management. As a younger woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, I bring fresh perspectives and a commitment to encouraging diverse voices in conservation leadership.

Laura Zanmiller

(campaign site)

I believe my experience on the SWCD board, and the knowledge of conservation practices will continue to have a positive impact on the SWCD board’s work. Since being elected, I have served on the board in many capacities including secretary, vice chair, chair and have represented Dakota County on the Metro Conservation Board. Since 2023, I have represented the metro area at the MN State Association. I was proud to be part of our Dakota County SWCD being awarded Conservation District of the year in 2023.

I am passionate about the environment and the SWCD’s role in preserving and protecting our land and water resources. I bring a suburban perspective to a board that has historically been largely focused on agriculture.

I completed a year-long leadership training program through the University of Minnesota Extension as well as the Master Gardner program. I volunteer at Dodge Nature Center’s Teaching and Community Garden and serve on the West St Paul Environmental Community.
