More than 200 people came out on Saturday for the Knock Out Hunger Border Battle, a food packing event that pitted West St. Paul against South St. Paul to see who could pack more food for local food shelves. While West St. Paul packed more food, local food shelves win with a total of 30,720 meals packed.

The event: South Robert Street Business Association (SRSBA) organized the event at Evolve Workplace where each city fielded eight teams of volunteers to pack oatmeal for Harvest Pack. The event also included a supply drive, and meals and supplies will be distributed to local nonprofits including 360 CommunitiesNeighborhood HouseNeighbors, Inc., and The Open Door Pantry.

The result: West St. Paul packed 54 boxes amounting to 17,280 meals, while South St. Paul packed 42 boxes, totalling 13,440. So West St. Paul takes home the championship belt (yes, there is a literal belt), but local food shelves will get the 96 boxes of food and donated supplies.

  • “In a friendly rivalry like this, if we can feed 30,000 kids, that’s the win for everybody,” said organizer Jim Probst.
