The Optimist Club of West St. Paul hosted the 27th annual ISD 197 spelling bee last night at Two Rivers High School. A total of 33 students completed from all five elementary schools and two middle schools in the district.
Champions: The top speller for each bracket can continue on to compete in the regional spelling bee:
- Elementary school: Garlough fourth grader Chase Peterson won the elementary bracket after successfully spelling the word “Brooklyn.”
- Middle school: Heritage seventh grader Natalia Carlson won the middle school bracket after successfully spelling the word “legato.”
In addition to the district champions, each school had a champion crowned:
- Garlough: Chase Peterson (winning word: “Brooklyn”)
- Mendota: Elsa Holt (“disclaimer”)
- Moreland: Willow Koerner (“invisible”)
- Pilot Knob: Royce Malapit (“propitious”)
- Somerset: Aria Moran (“appreciation”)
- Friendly Hills: Milo Scharfenberg (“ficus”)
- Heritage: Natalia Carlson (“legato”)
Spelling Words
Part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the words were randomly selected from the Scripps’ word list. Some words were more challenging than others.
A few words that tripped students up included: contemptible, voracious, erlenmeyer flask, Gilgamesh, hypocaust, coccidiosis, Pleiades, Albuquerque, meitnerium, retinitis pigmentosa, campanology, decimation, extemporaneous, crustaceans, and fugue.
More impressively, some words students spelled correctly included: destitution, propitious, antonyms, minimus, lanthanides, luciferin, megaron, scandium, abens, Assam, rooibos tea, thoroughbred, rhythmically, and cauterize.
